Is the recommended ratio of 1 teacher to 6 students necessary on AED courses?

From the European Resuscitation Council Congress, 2009:

On AED courses, the ERC and Resuscitation Council (UK) recommend a maximum of 6 students to 1 trainer, yet on other first aid courses the ratio is 1 to 12.

A study compared the 1:6 ratio with 1:12. Groups of students were randomly split between the two ratios and the ability to use an AED was tested after 3, 6 and 12 months.

The study found no significant difference between the two ratios, but it only tested the ability to use an AED, not the ability to perform CPR.
